.001 File Type
File extension: 001 or .001
Author of the .001 file extension: Various
Category: Miscellaneous
Programs that use the .001 file type: Various
Explanation of .001 file extensions:
The .001 file extension is used by a variety of programs to indicate that a file has been split into a span of several related files.
For example, Symantec’s Ghost Disk Image uses this file extension. These files are limited to a maximum file size of 2GB. When dealing with partitions that are larger than 2 GB, Ghost Disk Image splits the image file into several smaller files called segments or spans. Each segment is 2GB or smaller.
Several different naming conventions are used but numbering with numerical file extensions such as .001 is common. An accompanying file with the .GHO file extension must accompany the .001 and other files.
Typical problems associated with the .001 file extension:
One of the most common problems with .001 files is restoring them. In the case of using the Ghost software, you must have the .GHO file as well as the consecutive .001 and .002 files (up to the total number of split files. Each individual file on its own is no good.
Another problem occurs when you use the wrong application to try to restore the split files. For example, if you have .001 and related files created by Ghost, you will need to use the Ghost application to piece them back together, not some other file splitter and joiner program such as FreeByte HJSplitter.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Make sure that you are using the correct program for putting your files back together. For example, if you are dealing with .gho and .001 files, you will need to use the Ghost utility to restore these files.
In addition, .001 files are also associated with some fax applications and TIFF files. Use a graphics reader if you believe the .001 file you have is an image file.
