.1 File Type
File extension: 1 or .1
Description: One of a series
Author of the .1 file extension: Various
Category: Miscellaneous
Programs that use the .1 file type: Various
Explanation of .1 file extensions:
The .1 file extension is used under a variety of circumstances and generally indicates that the file is one of a series of related files. For example, many archive files such as Stuffit Deluxe can split archives and files so that they are a series of smaller files (so that large files can fit on a series of small capacity floppy disks). Each split file is named consecutively such as samplefile.1, samplefile.2, samplefile.3, etc.
The software then pieces each of the separate split files back together into one large file.
Typical problems associated with the .1 file extension:
One of the most common problems with .1 files is when a user tries to open individual pieces of a split file.
Oftentimes, these split files come with an executable file that will piece the pieces back together again. This .exe file will look in the default location for the files and try to piece them together. However, if you saved the files to a location other than the expected default, the .exe file may have trouble.
Another common .1 problem occurs when Windows doesn’t know which program to use to open the .1 file.
Solutions/Recommendations:
If the .1 file that you are working with is part of a series of split files, you will need to have a copy of the software that split it in order to piece it back together. If the files came with an executable, do not change the default unzip location. Let the .exe work as designed.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .1 errors.
