Author of the .api file extension: Adobe Systems, Inc.

Category: Plug-in

Programs that use the .api file type: Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Acrobat Reader

Explanation of .api file extensions:

The .api file extension is a plug in that provides additional features along with support for other formats to Adobe’s Acrobat and Acrobat Reader applications.

Adobe API files are plug-ins that are linked dynamically to Acrobat or Acrobat reader. These are essentially small programs that can be used for different purposes much like DLL files. Several layers are part of the Adobe Acrobat API which control different parts of the Acrobat environment. Developers create API files using Adobe Software Developer Kit tools. When they create an API output file, it is a dynamically linked library file that has an API file extension. These files need to be placed in the Plug-ins folder under Acrobat.

In addition to being an Adobe Acrobat plug-in, a file with the file extension API could be and Adobe Printer Ink file, passed parameter file, or a printer driver.

Typical problems associated with the .api file extension:

One of the most common problems with .api files is when they are missing, corrupt, or are not placed in the proper folder. File corruption can affect any type of file including .API files. When this happens, Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat reader may not work properly.

In addition, installing newer versions of the software or uninstalling the software could potentially remove all API files or replace existing API files with incompatible versions.

Another common .api problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .api files removed by spyware or other processes.

Solutions/Recommendations:

First, check the Plug-ins folder under Acrobat or Acrobat Reader to see if the file is in place. If the API file has disappeared, you may need to reinstall your software to get it back. You can also go to Adobe’s website to see if a patch or download is available to address your missing or corrupt .API file.
