File extension: CACHE or .cache
Author of the .cache file extension: Various
Category: Miscellaneous file
Programs that use the .cache file type: Various programs use .cache files
Explanation of .cache file extensions:
The .cache file extension stands for cache. These files tore recently-used information in a cache for various programs. Cache files are used by numerous programs including Web browsers, image editing applications programs, and other programs to speed the loading of recently viewed data.
Typical problems associated with the .cache file extension:
One of the most common problems with .cache files is that they can grow quite large and take up too much disk space. When this happens, system performance suffers and you may not have enough disk space for other uses.
Solutions/Recommendations:
In most cases, you can delete .cache files and free up disk space. There are a variety of ways to do this. You can search Windows Explorer for all .cache files by entering *.cache in the Search box. From there, you can delete the files. However, this may cause you to inadvertently delete required .cache files or files that you still need.
A better way to delete temporary files and regain your disk space is to use the Disk Cleanup tool. This is found in the System Tools folder (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup). Run Disk Cleanup and instruct it to delete Temporary Internet Files, Downloaded Program Files and Temporary Files.
Another way is to use the Internet Explorer “Internet Options†menu. Go to Tools in Internet Explorer and choose Internet Options. Find the General Tab and its Temporary Internet Files (renamed Browsing History in IE 7) section. Here, you’ll find the Delete Files button.
You can also adjust how much disk space to allow the cache to use. Click the Settings Tab in this same area and slide the bar to adjust the amount of disk space.
Third party software is also available that can clean the cache safely.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .cache errors.
