The .chk file extension stands for check. These are fragments that have been cleaned from the disk using the Windows disk checking programs such as ScanDisk or CHKDiSK. When errors are found, these utilities can find errors and can save these file fragments in .CHK files. CHK files are stored in the Found folder after disk-checking has been run.
Some other programs such as EpiData CheckFile use a different type of .chk file. In this case, the EpiData .chk file contains information and rules for data entry and checking.
