Description: Comma Separated Values

Author of the .csv file extension: Various

Category: Data file

Programs that use the .csv file type: Microsoft Excel and many others

Explanation of .csv file extensions:

The .csv file extension stands for comma separated values or comma separated variables. This file extension indicates a database file that has been exported using a comma delimited format. Each line of the file represents a single record with commas separating the various fields of the record. For example, lines in a CSV file describing various dog breeds could look something like this:

Chihuahua, toy breed, large pointy ears, family pet
German shepherd, large breed, alert upright ears, guard dog

The advantage of using .csv files is that you can then import the file into a different database and have the fields and records maintain their relationships. CSV files is the standard method used to share data between various databases which may not otherwise be compatible with each other.

Typical problems associated with the .csv file extension:

One of the most common problems with importing .csv files is setting the wrong type of delimiter. For example, some users export their data using some other symbol besides commas such as tabs, spaces, or the “|” symbol. For example, the same .csv file using a different symbol could look like this:

Chihuahua| toy breed| large pointy ears| family pet
German shepherd| large breed| alert upright ears| guard dog

Another common .csv problem occurs when a file association is incorrect.

Solutions/Recommendations:

To import a .csv file into Excel, you will simply need to use the File, Open options on the Excel menu. A dialog box will open once Excel realizes that the file is a .csv file. From here, you will need to pick the correct delimiter. A preview box is show to help you in identifying the right delimiter.

Sometimes, when you double click a .csv file, nothing happens or the file opens in NotePad. If you want it to open in Excel, you can change the file association by right-clicking the .csv file and choosing Open With. Now, search for Excel and set Excel as the default program for opening .csv files if you want.
