.DB File Type
File extension: DB or .db
Description: Database files
Author of the .db file extension: Various
Category: Database files
Programs that use the .db file type: Microsoft Access, Filemaker Pro, and others
Explanation of .db file extensions:
The .db file extension stands for database. Many different database applications use this generic file extension.
Another type of .db file is the thumbs.db file which is simply a cache of thumbnail images in a directory. This cache speeds up the process of loading thumbnails when you use the thumbnail view in Windows Explorer to view the contents of a particular folder.
Typical problems associated with the .db file extension:
One of the most common problems with .db files is that they can become corrupt. Databases often become extremely large and complex.
The thumbs.db files can also grow in size and take up valuable disk space.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Most database applications such as Microsoft Access come with a built-in utility to help you manage your .db file. When the .db file becomes unstable, you can use the “repair database” or “database maintenance” features to take care of the problem.
Sometimes copying the .db file to a new location on the disk will solve problems with opening a damaged .db file. If a portion of the disk has a bad sector, copying the .db file to a clean location often does the trick.
To turn off the thumbs.db feature in Windows and prevent the creation of multiple thumbs.db files, go to My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, and click the View tab. Scroll to “Do not cache thumbnails” and place a check mark in the box. Click OK.
If you want to recover space by deleting all of the thumbs.db files, go into Windows Explorer and click on the hard disk. Now type in “thumbs.db” in the Search box. Click Edit, Select All. Click your delete button on the keyboard or go to File, Delete.
