Explanation of .ged file extensions:
The .ged file extension stands for GEneological Data COMmunications. This format stores data related to genealogy in an ASCII text format that many different genealogical software applications can use across many different computer systems including Windows, Macintosh, and Unix.
Typical problems associated with the .ged file extension:
One of the most common problems with .ged files is file corruption.
Another common problem is simple operator error. For example, you may intend to save the file to a floppy so that you can give it to a relative however by accident, you forget to change the destination drive from C: to A:. Thus, the floppy disk is blank.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Because .ged files can be generated on one system and imported onto another, corruption and computer viruses are possible. Problems can start in one computer system and show up in the new system. For example, if a user creates a .ged file on one computer but a different computer cannot open the file, the problem can have started in the original computer making it impossible to open in the second computer or the original system may be just fine while the second system is confused about how to open the file in questions.
When saving a .ged file for someone else, make sure to save the file to the appropriate disk drive, not the default hard drive as normal. If it helps, use the drag and drop techniques to drag a copy of the .ged file onto the floppy disk drive or other removable storage device.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .ged errors.
