The .hmt file extension stands for HighMAT which was a technology being developed by Microsoft to organize media formats such as MP3, JPG, WMA, MPEG-4, and JPG on CDs. However, HighMAT is no longer being developed my Microsoft.

One of the most common problems with .hmt files is that it is no longer being developed or supported. This means that unless you currently have a HMT compatible DVD or CD player or software application, you may not be able to play these files.
