Typical problems associated with the .idx file extension:

One of the most common problems with .idx files is when the .idx is not found by the program that needs it. For example, you may see an error such as:
A file necessary for your AOL software to work correctly, the main .idx file, has been damaged. To fix the problem, click “Fix It For Me” to have AOL automatically go through the steps to correct the problem.

Another common .idx problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .idx files removed by spyware or other processes.

Another problem with indexing in general is that while creating an index for speeding searches can make your search results more efficient, it can drain your system’s resources overall – even when you’re not searching.

Solutions/Recommendations:

If a program is missing an .idx file, you can try reinstalling the program. Another option is to check the software developer’s website to see if you can download a patch or update the software. Because so many different programs use .idx files for numerous purposes, it’s best to check with the software’s website for specific instructions. For example, a database .idx file may be able to be created manually.

Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common computer errors such as .idx errors.

If your computer’s performance is sluggish and you have indexing enabled on your hard disk, consider turning this option off for better overall performance. Go to My Computer and right-click on the disk. Choose Properties. The General tab will be displayed. Find the box that says, “Index this drive for faster searching” and remove the check mark from it.
