Explanation of .ifo file extensions:
The .ifo file extension stands for info. These files supplement the DVD’s .vob and .vro files which contain audio and video data. An .ifo file contains information such as which screen to display at startup, chapter locations, audio track locations, and other scene information.
IFO files are different from VOB files where information is contained within the file.
Numerous manufacturers use .ifo and .vro files. If the file VIDEO_TS.IFO existis, it contains control and playback information for the entire DVD.
The VIDEO_TS.IFO is referred to as the Video Manager Information file, or VMGI file. The VMGI file is required for all DVD-compliant discs.
Typical problems associated with the .ifo file extension:
One of the most common problems with .ifo files involves backing up and converting DVDs. If the .ifo files are not copied as well, the disc will lack important information and menus. In addition, if the .ifo files become corrupt on the disc, the software players may not work properly.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Converters exist that allow users to convert .ifo files into other formats such as .avi. In addition, some of the converters transform the DVD files into files that can be played on portable video players such as a Zune player.
If a required .ifo file appears to be missing, double check the Recycle Bin to see if for some reason it has been deleted. You can also try a software program called ISO Buster which has an IFO recovery tool that scans your system form lost or missing .ifo files.
