.IN_ File Type
File extension: IN_ or .in_
Author of the .in_ file extension: Microsoft Corporation
Category: Compressed files
Programs that use the .in_ file type: Various
Explanation of .in_ file extensions:
While many file extensions that end with an underscore often represent a compressed file that is part of an install routine, this may or may not be the case with .in_ files. This isn’t necessarily a compressed .ini file. For example, the file could be a compressed .inf file.
IN_ files are commonly used in conjunction with installing and booting Windows XP from a USB drive.
Typical problems associated with the .in_ file extension:
One of the most common problems with .in_ files is opening them.
Another common .in_ problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .in_ files removed by spyware or other processes.
Solutions/Recommendations:
To open an .in_ file, use a program such as WinRAR. You can also use the built-in expand.exe program that comes with your Windows operating system at either a command prompt or the Run line. For example, if you want to retrieve DLLs or other system files from your Windows installation CD, they are likely contained in an .in_ file that must first be extracted. Insert the Windows CD and use the Expand command as follows:
Click the Start button, click Run, and type: expand [source] [destination] with the source being the path to the file that you want to expand from the Windows XP installation disk and destination being the path to the location where you will be saving the file. Then click OK.
