The .ithmb file extension stands for iThumbnail. This file represents a collection of thumbnail images which, when clicked, take you to the larger image. These images are displayed on iPods with photo capabilities.
The .ithmb file is a single file that can contain all of the iPod’s full color thumbnails.
Typical problems associated with the .ithmb file extension:
One of the most common problems with .ithmb files is when you want to view them on a device other than an iPod. While you can easily transfer the .ithmb file to your hard disk, your computer won’t be able to display the thumbnails unless the file has been converted into a readable format such as TIFF.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Set iTunes preferences to “Include full resolution photos.†This will allow you to access full sized images via the Photos folder in the iPod in the first place. If you have not set this option but still want to retrieve images via the .ithmb file, you will need to use a converter such as the File Juicers from Echo One to convert your .ithmb files to TIFF files.
Another converter is Keith’s iPod Photo Reader. This program goes in and takes the .ithmb file and creates a browsable library of the small thumbnails that you can expand into larger images and then save into the PICT format.
