Explanation of .itl file extensions:

The .itl file extension stands for iTunes Library. This file extension is used on both Windows and Macintosh computers. The .itl file is a database containing a list of all music found in the iTunes database as well as songs, user playlists, song ratings, and user comments.

The location of .itl files depends on whether you are running a Windows or Mac-based computer. In Macintosh systems, you’ll find the .itl file here: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
On Windows-based systems, the .itl file is located here: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl

Typical problems associated with the .itl file extension:

As with all files, .itl files can become corrupt or get deleted accidentally. Some users have had issues with newer versions not recognizing their older .itl files.

Solutions/Recommendations:

If you’re experiencing issues with a corrupt .itl file, iTunes can rebuild your music list by searching the Music folder for your songs. While this option will restore your music, you will lose the extras such as your playlists, ratings, and comments.

In addition, both the Windows and Mac versions of iTunes save a secondary version that makes your music and playlists available to other software applications. This related file is called “iTunes Music Library.xml.” It is located in the same directory as your .itl file.

You must have iTunes installed to access your iTunes Library.

If you cannot access your iTunes library after upgrading to a new version of the iTunes application, try accessing the .xml file or downgrading to the earlier version until a patch is released. You can drag and drop your .itl and .xml files out of the iTunes directory and then open the iTunes software where you can import the .xml file.

Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .itl errors.
