Category: Multimedia file
Programs that use the .m4a file type: Various
Explanation of .m4a file extensions:
The .m4a file extension stands for MPEG 4 Audio.
MPEG-4 is a video compression format that is built on several layers including the audio layer. The .m4a file represents the audio layer of MPEG-4 movies. M4A is evolving into the new audio file compression standard. This codec uses less storage space yet provides lossless encoding. As such, it is often referred to as Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE) or Apple Lossless.
In addition, .m4a files can be standalone audio files much like .mp3 files. These files store more in smaller file sizes.
Typical problems associated with the .m4a file extension:
One of the most common problems with .m4a files involves playing them on media players. Many different media players have different defaults for encoding and playing back audio files. In addition, when trying to play .m4a files, your favorite media player may not automatically open it. Instead, a different media player might open it or no player at all.
Another problem that .m4a files sometimes encounter is file corruption or invalid instructions within the Windows registry.
Solutions/Recommendations:
First, update your media player as most media player developers have made their players compatible with this format. If your media player doesn’t recognize the .m4a file extension, try renaming the file with the .mp4 extension instead.
If you try to open an .m4a file and no programs are found, right click on the file in Windows Explorer and choose Open With. You should see a list of media players. Pick the one you prefer from the list and set it as the default for opening this type of file.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .m4a errors.
