Programs that use the .m4v file type: Various
Explanation of .m4v file extensions:
The .m4v file extension is a standard that has evolved from the same committee that designed the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats. MPEG-4 standardizes technological elements that allow for the integration of the production, distribution and content access of digital television, interactive graphics applications, and interactive multimedia.
M4v is most commonly used in Apple iTunes and the Apple iPod.
Typical problems associated with the .m4v file extension:
One of the most common problems with .m4v files is finding a player capable of playing the file. If you are using an older media player, you may have difficulty opening .m4v files.
Another common .m4v problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .m4v files removed by spyware or other processes. This can make a previously playable .m4v file either unplayable or unrecognized due to a missing file association.
Solutions/Recommendations:
M4V files can be renamed to MP4 file extensions. As a container format, this file extension allows for the combination of audio and video into one single file. If your media player can’t handle .m4v files, try renaming them as .mp4 files.
If you are using an older media player, consider updating to the latest release which should have support for .m4v files.
If you click on an .m4v file and no program is associated with it, you can manually set the file association to your favorite media player by right-clicking the .m4v file and choosing “open with.†Next, find your favorite media player in the list and make it the default player for .m4v files.
