The .mdi file extension stands for Microsoft Document Image. This is a high-resolution graphics format that was developed from the TIFF format. The .MDI file extension is used by Microsoft Office 2003 and above for saving scanned documents. These files can be converted to Word .DOC documents using optical character recognition software.

One of the most common problems with .mdi files involves opening them. You must have Office 2003 or above or a compatible viewer.
Office 2007 users often encounter trouble when you double-clicking an .mdi file in Windows Explorer. This file does not open as expected in Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Instead an error saying “Windows cannot open file_name.mdi†appears.
Another common .mdi problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .mdi files removed by spyware or other processes.

Your best bet when saving documents created with Office Document Imaging is to save them in the .TIF format. By doing so, you will be able to share the file across other applications more easily and be able to share them with other users.
If you’ve received an .mdi file and you do not have Office 2003 or above, you can download a MDI viewer.
If you have Office 2007 but get an error when trying to open an .mdi file, you must install the Office Document Imaging program or the viewer component of the program. This is not automatically installed when you originally installed Office 2007 nor does it install on demand.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common computer errors including file association errors for .mdi files.
