The .mst file extension is a file containing modifications that apply to a package during installation of software. This allows developers to modify the setup programs for their software.
Typical problems associated with the .mst file extension:
One of the most common problems with .mst files is when the developer has created a custom MST file that doesn’t take into account the proper user credentials. For example, an MST may be set up to use local user credentials rather than domain user credentials required to access certain files or procedures.
Another problem involves trying to open MST files from the Custom Installation Wizard that do not correspond with the MSI file. This can happen when MST and MSI files were created using different versions of Office such as Standard version versus Professional version.
Solutions/Recommendations:
As an end user, you probably won’t run into many MST errors as most MST issues should have been debugged during the testing phase. However, if you do run into an error during the installation of a particular program, you should check with the technical support for the software you are trying to install. They may have an alternate version of the installer already created that addresses known issues.
If you have mismatched MST and MSI files, click OK to make the error message go away. Now, click Back in the Open the MST File dialog box and choose the .msi file from the version of Office that you originally used to create the transform. Click Name and path of MSI file to open in the Open the MSI File dialog box. Here you will find a list of all the .msi files that you previously used in the Custom Installation Wizard. Click Next and then click Open an existing MST file in the Open the MST File dialog box. Select the desired transform and tclick Next.
