.ODT File Type
File extension: ODT or .odt
Author of the .odt file extension: Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Category: Document file
Programs that use the .odt file type: Open Office and Star Office as well as a variety of compatible programs such as NeoOffice, AbiWord, and KWord.
Explanation of .odt file extensions:
The .odt file extension is a document typically created by either Open Office’s Writer or Star Office Writer from Sun Microsystems. This file extension uses the OASIS Open Document XML-based standard which is on track to become the industry standard for sharing documents.
Typical problems associated with the .odt file extension:
One of the most common problems with .odt files is when file associations go awry. If you receive an .odt file and your computer doesn’t know which program to use, you may need to create a new file association.
If you do not have OpenOffice.org’s Writer or a compatible program or ODT viewer, you will not be able to view the .odt file.
In addition, .odt files can become corrupt.
Another common .odt problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .odt files removed by spyware or other processes.
Solutions/Recommendations:
First, in order to view an ODT file, you must have a compatible program such as Open Office Writer. This is a free program that can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org.
If you already have the software but the file is no longer associated with the correct program, you may need to reset the file association. To do this, right-click the file and choose “open with†from there, browse the list until you find OpenOffice Writer or another compatible program. To make OpenOffice Writer the default program, place a check mark in the box at the bottom of the dialog box.
File corruption and missing file associations can also be corrected by using a registry cleaner. This can resolve many common .odt errors.
