.OFX File Type
File extension: OFX or .ofx
Author of the .ofx file extension: Microsoft Corporation
Category: Miscellaneous file
Programs that use the .ofx file type: Microsoft Money
Explanation of .ofx file extensions:
The .ofx file extension stands for Open Financial Exchange. These files are used by financial programs such as Microsoft Money. They contain financial information downloaded from a financial institution’s website. When downloading files such as these, you’ll often see the term “Active Statement†to describe the .ofx file. You can export .ofx files from the website directly into your MS Money software.
Typical problems associated with the .ofx file extension:
Occasionally, problems can occur with .ofx files. You may see a message saying that the file is corrupt or you might be prompted to select a program to open the downloaded file. For example, if the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .ofx files removed by spyware or other processes, you will manually need to reset the file association.
Sometimes, an .ofx file does not contain all of the information expected. This can happen when financial transactions have not yet cleared the bank. It can also happen if you don’t pay attention to the date range you are downloading. For example, many downloads default to the current transaction period. If you haven’t downloaded for a while, you may have transactions that you need to retrieve from the previous transaction period.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Sometimes, re-downloading the file from the financial website is all that’s needed to be done. Other times, you will need to reset the file association or do further troubleshooting. You can use a registry cleaner to resolve many common .ofx errors and you can choose the “Open with†command to find Microsoft Money and link it as the main program for opening .ofx files.
You may need to repair Microsoft Money to overcome some of the .ofx file errors.
Pay attention to the range of dates that you are downloading. Most websites allow you to enter a specific date range.
