Category: Compressed files

Programs that use the .p7m file type: Cryptigo p7mViewer or the CryptigoS/MIME for Eudora plugin.

Explanation of .p7m file extensions:

The .p7m file extension represents an encrypted e-mail message. The contents of the e-mail contain a smime.p7m file which will need to be unencrypted before they can be viewed. A private key that matches the file’s public key may be required to open the file. Most e-mail programs display received encrypted files as smime.p7m attachments.

Typical problems associated with the .p7m file extension:

One of the most common problems with .p7m files is not being able to open them. Because the contents are encrypted, you must have an appropriate “key” to unlock the file as well as the appropriate software such as Cryptigo p7m Viewer.

The two main reasons you might not be able to open a .p7m file is when you lack the private key or when the attachment has become corrupt.

Another common .p7m problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .p7m files removed by spyware or other processes.

Solutions/Recommendations:

If you’ve received a smime.p7m file in your email, download the p7mViewer. Save the file and try opening it. Digitally signed messages can be read by anyone with a p7mViewer while encrypted messages can only be read by the intended recipients.

For encrypted messages, you must own a private key. This involves a fair amount of coordination between you and the sender but once set up, you should be able to send and receive encrypted messages.

As with any type of attachment, use anti-virus software and anti-spyware software to protect your system from malware.
