.PBP File Type
File extension: PBP or .pbp
Author of the .pbp file extension: Sony Corporation of America
Category: miscellaneous files
Programs that use the .pbp file type: Sony PlayStation Portable
Explanation of .pbp file extensions:
The .pbp file extension represents a firmware update for the PSP which is a portable, handheld PlayStation entertainment system.
The system contains a command called Network Update. When firmware updates to the PSP become available, this command downloads image to: /PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP on a Sony memory stick. Next, the PSP system uses the .pbp file to update the firmware.
Note: Some users have also tweaked .PBP file types for programming the system for their own uses. The .pbp files must be digitally signed by Sony. However, firmware versions 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 allow for the duplication or improvisation of the signature which means that the PSP can run unsigned code.
PBP files not only update the data but they can also update data used for starting up UMD games, PSP game demos, or other applications. PBP files are also used to hack or modify the PSP player.
Typical problems associated with the .pbp file extension:
One of the most common problems with .pbp files is having an invalid .pbp file. If you are downloading “homebrew†.pbp files, you can’t be sure of the quality. In addition, you must place the eboot.pbp file in the proper location.
Solutions/Recommendations:
The eboot.pbp file generally goes in the PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder on your Memory Stick. Double check to be sure that the file is located in the proper location.
Whenever downloading files such as pbp files from the Internet, it’s smart to be sure that your PC is adequately protected with virus and spyware protection.
