File extension: PGM or .pgm
Description: Portable Graymap Graphic
Author of the .pgm file extension:
Category: Graphic file
Programs that use the .pgm file type: Netpbm, Adobe PhotoShop (with the CartaPGM plug-in), and various text editors
Explanation of .pgm file extensions:
The .pgm file extension stands for Portable Gray Map. These images are 8-bit grayscale images containing various shades of gray and transparent pixels. You can view and edit these in a text editor where you’ll see that numbers represent the shades of each pixel.
Note: another type of .pgm file exists which is used by CGI programs that reference a script on a server. The server will run the script and output the information on a webpage. These files are often browser specific. If you are trying to open a .pgm file and get a message asking which program to use, select Internet Explorer as it is the most commonly used one.
Typical problems associated with the .pgm file extension:
One of the most common problems with .pgm files is opening it in PhotoShop. In order to work with .pgm files in Adobe PhotoShop you must install the CartaPGM plugin.
Another problem is when Windows doesn’t know which program to open the .pgm file with.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Download and install the CartaPGM plugin for Adobe PhotoShop.
If you want to work with a PGM file and have already installed the CartaPGM plugin but cannot open the file, the file association may not be set. Simply right-click the .pgm file in Windows Explorer and choose Open With. Find PhotoShop in the list and select it. If you want, you can set PhotoShop as the default program for opening .pgm files.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .pgm errors.
