Author of the .psf file extension: Horstmann Software Development Company / Adobe Systems
Category: Miscellaneous
Programs that use the .psf file type: ChiWriter / Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe PhotoShop Elements
Explanation of .psf file extensions:
The .psf file extension is used for multiple purposes two of which are for ChiWriter PostScript Printer Font files and Photoshop Proof Setup files.
ChiWriter was a scientific, multi-font word processor developed and distributed by Horstmann Software Development Corporation. This word processor was designed for MS-DOS though was also able to be launched by creating an icon with Windows 3.xx or Windows 95. While the software could create a graphic screen and offered mouse support, since it lacked true Windows support, it quickly fell out of favor around 1995. Horstmann has been out of business since 1996 and there is no longer any support for ChiWriter.
PSF files are also used by Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to store color settings. These files are used to provide accurate previews of images and how they will look when printed.
Other uses for PSF files include AcrSoft PhotoStudio’s image file and PlayStation sound format.
Typical problems associated with the .psf file extension:
One of the most common problems with .psf files from ChiWriter is that there is no support. If you are still running ChiWriter, you are stuck with the software as is.
Another common .psf problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .psf files removed by spyware or other processes. With so many different used for PSF files, file associations can get mixed up too.
Solutions/Recommendations:
You can convert your ChiWriter files to either ASCII or PostScript. With an ASCII file, you can import your document into another word processor but you will lose your fonts and scientific equations.
You can reset file associations so that the appropriate application opens PSF files by right-clicking the file and choosing Open With. Next, select the application and mark the box below that will set it as the default program for PSF files.
