Explanation of .qif file extensions:
The .qif file extension stands for Quicken Interchange Files. These files are ASCII text files that are used to exchange financial data to and from Quicken software and a financial institution’s website. These files can also be used when you want to import Quicken data into Microsoft Money.
For example, when you participate in online banking and want to synchronize your data between your bank’s website and your local copy of Quicken, all you need to do is use the website’s download function to create a QIF file and download it into your software.
Typical problems associated with the .qif file extension:
One of the most common problems with .qif files is when the text file has inadvertently been changed. For example, you can view .qif files with text editors however the data is extremely sensitive to changes such as formatting changes or even the order in which the data is sorted. The slightest change could cause major problems with the file.
Another common .qif problem involves the move away from .qif to new .ofx data import technology.
Solutions/Recommendations:
First, don’t manually open .qif files. Use the import function found in your financial software. Next, if you are using an older version of Quicken, you may find less and less support for .qif downloads as more financial institutions move to the newer downloading formats. Consider upgrading to a newer version of the software to avoid compatibility issues and continue synchronizing your data with your bank.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .qif errors.
