Scan for File Extension Errors File extension: SOL or .sol

Author of the .sol file extension: Adobe Systems, Inc.

Category: Settings files

Programs that use the .sol file type: Adobe Flash

Explanation of .sol file extensions:

The .sol file extension is used by Adobe Flash. The Flash Player is a client application that is available in most common web browsers. SOLs are shared objects that allow for real-time data sharing between objects on the local location. These SOL files hold user data and settings that are stored by Adobe Flash Player. These files are quite similar to a cookie that a Web page has saved only they are used specifically by Flash Player.

Typical problems associated with the .sol file extension:

One of the most common problems with .sol files is when the user is presented with a Flash Local Storage dialog box. This dialog box prompts the user to allow or deny local storage. This is because the default file size for local objects is 100KB. Any objects that are larger will trigger this dialog box.

Another common problem occurs when users want to share their settings (such as for a Flash game) with another computer. By copying the related .sol file, these settings can be shared. However, unless they are stored in the appropriate folder, this doesn’t work.

Another common .sol problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .sol files removed by spyware or other processes.

Solutions/Recommendations:

If you want to open, view, or edit SOL files, you can use SolVE, a Local Shared Object Viewer/Editor.

If you have accepted larger SOL files when prompted and want to double check to see that they are not too large, you can find them in the ApplicationData\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\(miscellaneous numbers and letters)\localhost folder. These files will likely be hidden, so you will need to enable “show hidden files and folders” in the Folder Options. To do this, go to Control Panel, click Folder Options. Click the View tab, and scroll to this option.

If you have copied .sol files to another computer, they must be stored in the proper folder in order for Flash to access them:

Windows 2000, XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\(miscellaneous numbers and letters)\localhost

Windows 95, Me:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\(miscellaneous numbers and letters)\localhost

Mac OS 9:
Macintosh HD/System Folder/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#Shared Objects/(miscellaneous numbers and letters)/localhost

Mac OS X;
/Users/Short name/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects/(miscellaneous numbers and letters)/localhost

If your computer is acting up after running Flash applications or is generating .SOL errors, use a registry cleaner to clean out the registry and solve numerous computer errors.
