Explanation of .thm file extensions:
The .thm file extension is an abbreviation for “thumbnail.†A thumbnail is a small image file that acts as a preview of a larger file. By displaying a tiny image rather than the full-sized image, applications and web pages run faster. These images are usually hyperlinked to the full-sized image so that when a user clicks on the thumbnail, the full-sized image opens.
THM files are often used on web pages, in clipart galleries, and in some digital cameras. THM files are also used to represent movie clips. Usually the first frame of the movie file is captured as an image and displayed as a thumbnail.

One of the most common problems with .thm files is when a user transfers movies from their cameras to their PC and finds that their movie won’t play.
Another common .thm problem occurs when links are no longer linked to the original image.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Keep in mind that the .thm files are very similar to icons. Opening a .thm file in a media player will only show the first frame of the video – it won’t play the video. You must find the actual video clip instead which could be one of several formats. You can set up your folder options to display the extension of the file types to avoid accidentally loading up the wrong file. To do this open Windows Explorer and choose Organize, Folder and Search Options. Click the View tab and remove the checkmark in the line that says, “Hide extensions for known file types.â€
