Explanation of .vob file extensions:
The .vob file extension is the video portion of many DVD movies. Movies on DVDs aren’t simply one large file; instead, they involve many different types of files including files for menus and navigation as well as the movie and audio files. VOB files are specialized MPEG-2 files.
Typical problems associated with the .vob file extension:
One of the most common problems with .vob files involves playing them. You will need a DVD player application to play .vob files on your computer.
Another common .vob problem occurs when you try to copy them and burn your own copy of the DVD. Most commercial movies are encrypted to prevent the copying of their proprietary content.
Many owners of iPod Video players want to be able to play their DVDs on their iPod Video players and run into problems converting the .vob to the right format.
Another problem arises when you try to play .vob files on your computer but the computer doesn’t have a file associated with it.
Solutions/Recommendations:
First, in order to play .vob files, you must have some sort of a DVD player application on your computer such as InterVideo WinDVD.
Copying commercial DVDs is illegal. When you try to copy the .vob files to your hard drive or to a blank DVD, you will most likely not be able to play it because the original DVD has likely been encrypted.
If you want to play your DVDs on your iPod Video player or Sony PSP, you will need software designed for converting the .vob to .avi and transferring the output to the video player.
If you have a .vob file but it won’t play on your computer, make sure that you have a file association set up. It’s possible that Windows doesn’t know what program to use to open the file. Right-click the file and choose “open with.” Next, find WinDVD or some other compatible program from the list and open the file. You can also place a check mark in the box that asks if you want this program to be the default player for .vob files.
To rule out issues with your Windows registry, use a registry cleaning utility. This should resolve many common .vob errors.
