If you see a file ending with the extension of .w02, it’s a pretty good bet that the file is the second in a series of related files that have been split into smaller files and included in an archive such as WinZIP or spanned across several floppy disks. For example, when a setup program is too large to fit on a standard floppy, it can be split into smaller files so that each file in the series can be copied to a floppy. You might have a series of five floppies with each named something like this: setup.exe, setup.wo2, setup.wo3, setup.wo4, setup.wo5.
Typical problems associated with the .w02 file extension:
One of the most common problems with .w02 files is when a disk in the series is missing or damaged. Usually the first disk in the series starts the process and each consecutive disk must be inserted in the proper order in order for the process to complete. If a single disk is corrupt, the whole process will fail.
Another problem arises when a browser adds an extra dot to the file extension during the download. For example, the file will download as sample.exe and sample..w02. This extra dot will through off the EXE file and cause a failure.
Solutions/Recommendations:
If you have a .wo2 file that’s part of a series of disks and the process won’t complete, you may need to replace the disk. Check with the software developer to obtain a new copy of the files.
Double check to be sure that the W02 file only has a single dot in the file name such as sample.w02, not sample..w02.
