Explanation of .wps file extensions:
The .wps file extension is an extension used with the word processor found in Microsoft Works. While similar to the .doc format used by Microsoft Word, the .wps files do not contain as much formatting information or any macros that .doc documents can contain.
The .wps file extension has been discontinued for both the Macintosh as well as Windows versions. It has been replaced with the standard .doc file extension.

One of the most common problems with .wps files is when someone who does not have Microsoft Works tries to open it.
Another problem involves file corruption as well as lost file associations which means that sometimes the file cannot be opened at all, even when Works is installed on the computer.
Solutions/Recommendations:
In order to open a .wps file, you must have either Microsoft Works or Microsoft Word installed or you can install a convertor. Most versions of Microsoft Word can handle .wps files.
File corruption can happen to just about any file type including .wps files. If you can no longer open an existing .wps file, it may be corrupt. Sometimes you will be able to open it in a text editor such as NotePad and recover the text (but not the formatting). Other times, you may be able to salvage the file by copying it to a new area of your disk. Try running the disk-error checking tool and see if you can open the file after errors have been cleaned up.
Missing file associations are another common problem. Right-click on the Start button and pick Explore. Windows Explorer will open. Navigate to the .wps file you want to open and right-click it. Choose “open with” from the submenu. Now, scroll through the list of programs until you find Microsoft Works. Select Works and then click the box below to make it the default program for opening .wps files.
Another good idea involves running a registry cleaning utility to resolve many common .wps errors.
