.XDS File Type
File extension: XDS or .xds
Description: Symantec Store Download Manager Partial Download
Author of the .xds file extension: Symantec
Category: Installer
Programs that use the .xds file type: Symantec Store Download Manager
Explanation of .xds file extensions:
The .xds file extension is used by Symantec for partial downloads. When downloading files from Symantec, instead of getting one large file, you get several smaller .xds files which are later pieced together by the installer in the background. When the download is complete, these files are pieced into one executable file.
Typical problems associated with the .xds file extension:
One of the most common problems with .xds files is when the download didn’t complete. Another problem is when the download completed just fine however the file extension didn’t get changed properly from .xds to .exe.
Solutions/Recommendations:
If you have numerous .xds files on your computer but the file that you downloaded is nowhere to be found, chances are that the download was interrupted and did not complete. This could be due to lack of disk space or other problems.
First, free up some space on your disk by deleting temporary files and using the Disk Cleanup Wizard. Next, delete the existing .xds files and try downloading again.
To easily find all .xds files, go to Windows Explorer and enter *.xds in the search bar. This will display all .xds files so that you can delete them.
If a single .xds from Symantec is found, try renaming it with the .exe extension. This may or may not work. This was a known issue for the .xds file called NIS_ProRetail.exe.xds. All you would need to do in this case is drop the .xds from the file name and NIS_ProRetail.exe should run.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .xds errors.
