.XPI File Type
File extension: XPI or .xpi
Description: Mozilla Installer Package
Author of the .xpi file extension: Mozilla and Firefox – XPInstall
Category: Compressed archive
Programs that use the .xpi file type: Mozilla
Explanation of .xpi file extensions:
The .xpi file extension stands for XP Install which is the installer package used for installing Mozilla and Firefox web browsers. The .xpi file extension is a compressed installation archive. It is used to install the web browsers as well as for installing browser extensions.
A Mozilla installer script installs the various components contained in the .xpi file. In addition, you can also drag and drop .xpi files into an open web browser window.
Typical problems associated with the .xpi file extension:
One of the most common problems with .xpi files is trouble installing them. For example, a file might not be compatible, the software might have XPInstall disabled, or a site might not be trusted by Firefox to prompt you to install the software.
Another problem involves downloading the .xpi file rather than immediately installing it.
Another common .xpi problem occurs when security software thinks the .xpi file may be spyware.
Solutions/Recommendations:
For compatibility issues, it’s best to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox. Once upgraded, you should be able to work with the .xpi file.
If Firefox has software installation disabled, you will not be able to install add-ons. To change this, enter “about:config” in the Firefox location bar. Enter “xpinstall:enabled” in the filter textbox. Make sure the value is set to “true.” To do this, right-click the property name and select “reset.”
Sometimes, websites do not automatically prompt for adding add-ons. You can add them to the list of trusted sites by clicking the yellow bar that says, “Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer.” Click on “edit options.” From here, you can add the site to the Allowed Sites list.
If you download an add-on but it doesn’t automatically install, drag and drop the .xpi file into the Firefox Add-ons Window. To open this window, go to Tools and choose Add-ons. Once the .xpi file is dragged in, the installation process should begin.
If your security software is blocking the add-on, try temporarily disabling it. Make sure to re-enable it as soon as you are done and perform a thorough scan afterwards.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .xpi errors.
